W124 E320 buying advice
Discussion
Hi,
I am new to the MB forum, I am looking for a cheap car for the year (keeping the mileage down on the others) to use for commuting and general driving as I am out of the country for 6 months come the summer. I have been offered a W124 E320 saloon with 130000 miles on the clock (unsure currently of FMBSH). Has a few scratches etc but seems clean although have not driven yet as buying off internet. Has had new head gasket and skim and seems pretty straight. MOT until end of 2008. Price is 975 - is this wrth a shot?

Hi Dan. Welcome to the MB side of PH
I have a '124 series E320 Coupe, and they are superb cars!
Seeing as the head gasket has already been done and the price is so low, it should be worth a punt!
Just make sure any toys are fully operational and that the gearbox shifts smoothly - jerking could mean it's on it's way out - £2,500 to replace. Ensure the there is no whine from the diff, either as a new one will set you back around £3,000. Also ensure there are no additional leaks anywhere around the engine and that the exhaust and catalytic converter is in good order, as these are expensive to replace with genuine MB parts. That's it for major mechanicals. If it's going to be a daily workhorse, then it should serve you fine. Considering it's under a grand with a lower mileage than most, it has to be worth it!

Bearing in mind that the asking price is less than the cost of a cylinder head gasket replacement I'd say it was good value
