Now that we have a Merc web site I can write on here that I have a 2002 CLK, I did read that their quality was falling down, but I have a number of squeeks, rattles and bits of rubber trim falling off from around the rear windows.
Thats my niggles over, I still love the car, it drives superbly well and is very comfortable and it still turns heads.

I would agree
My dad had a old shape C220CDI, built like a brick poo house, very square and sturdy. A bit taxi like (but the petrols wont be like that.
Traded it in for a new shape C270CDI and this car is better looking, much quicker, quiter, just a bloody good A-B car. Apart from the interior, shiney plastic and wood trim, sort it out Merc.

Re: build quality
Did anyone see the recent Which ? report on Car reliabilty ? Very interesting.
The theme seemed to be VAG group on the way down, Skoda which used to be top slipping down the list, and Audi in average, used to be much better a couple of yrs back. Biggest drop was the Audi TT, went practically to the bottom of the entire list last year - continous friday afternoon cars.
Also, MB on the way down too, BMW not great, particulary X5.
Whereas the Japanese makers were top of the list despite recession for the last 10 yrs, seems like the Germans 2-3 yrs into economic problems have been falling apart. Strange !
me, I drive an Alfa, so am used to bits falling off, but the last 3 have been touch wood reasonable.
Must admit the car I covet when we need a bigger car would be a 94-97 E class estate, they seem indestructable.

Since 1987 I owned the following Mercedes:-
1986 SL420,1992 E220 Coupe,1994 E320 Cabriolet,
1996 C220 CDI and finally a 1998 SL500 which I have now changed for a Porsche 911 Turbo.
All of my cars have been main dealer serviced, with the exception of the SL's all the other cars I have bought from new, both SL's were 12 months old (waiting lists). It has been extremely noticable how the build quality has deteriorated, post the 107 SL and the 124 E class, the quality of plastics and build overall is very poor. Even my SL420 had to have a top end rebuild at 50k miles, the E320 Cabriolet had an early traction control system that failed and could not be permanently fixed although the entire system was replaced under warranty.
At least these days they include the radio, previously I've had to pay for that, the speakers and the aerial to be fitted from new.
Comfortable cars to drive but increasingly a lost cause, especially since the dealership reorganisation.

I think the quality of MB has gone down since the Yanks got involved. Looking inside a current model, it's all plasticky and full of gimmicks. They used to fit toys that would be useful, not just for their own sakes.
How many cup holders are there in an E Class these days? I'm pleased that there are none in my 1998 E55
