I've been told that it's possible to put the roof up or down while on the move (up to 20 mph).
Anyone know if this is true?

You can, but not as standard. You need a kit.

This tells you what you need to know....

As standard it will only operate at up to 5mph.

I had a customer who used the module to allow it to operate at speed and he was very pleased with it.

wont using it on the move put a lot more strain on it & wear the mech out?

Never quite understood the desire to do this. I can't think of a single situation where I have needed to do this! If you could do it at 50mph then yes, but at crawling speed you are just as well off stopping and doing it - even if in a traffic jam it's only going to be a 20 second stop!!

Maybe I am missing something.

I agree with this, we always get people asking if they can use it whilst driving and I always ask why?? I can't believe that you would be travelling down the motorway and then think 'I know lets open the roof!!'.

i can understand the slow crawling traffic 'lets open the roof moment'. indeed i used to jump out my old mg & fold the roof while in traffic.
its the on the motorway stuff, id expect the roof to peal back & fly off as soon as the catches came undone.

Don't think you are missing anythingsmile The SLK roof works wonderfully, unless you abuse it, when it will leak, squeak and rattle. Opening and closing it at 30mph is abuse, I think. Wouldn't do it to mine...

Be nice if the roof remote worked at a distance of more than 1cm, though.

Its more useful for closing the roof if it comes on to rain whilst you are driving at slow speed, in town for example, where the aerodynamics of the car won't take the rain straight over the top.

I used to drive SLKs, CLKs and SLs all with the roofs down pretty much regardless of the weather, I particularly enjoyed a night drive with the roof down.

Me too!!! Only torrential rain gets the roof up. And then I stop to do it...no issue!!

Mine seems OK from about 5-10 feet if I have a following wind smile You do know the sensor is in the door handle so the remote needs to see that..apparently!!!

Further away than 'close' seems to stop halfway - its IR, I think, and needs a constant signal. Probably some safety requirement, an case you entangle yourdelf in the roof as its moving!!!

Not quite death but a neighbour of mine has a CLK cab, rang us one night to ask if we'd take his Mrs home as his roof mechanism had jammed and his wife was getting cold. As the chap from Mobilo (Mercedes Assistance) struggled to mend the roof mechanism my dad managed to get his hand jammed in the roof as it shut hehe

He screamed like a bitch, much to my amusement rofl
