Removing Chrome Arches
Discussion
Looking at a W126 (500 SEL) which has plenty going for it but, the all too common chrome arches. I know this is usually a good reason to walk away but other than this the car seems a good un. Has anyone had them removed? If so, what did they find and how much remedial work was involved in getting things sorted?
It really depends on the car.
I went to look at a W123 a few weeks ago and got the seller to prove the chrome arches could be removed there and then.
He obliged as he had only put them on a few months ago and they were only held on with clips, not screwed to the arch. Because he had liberally greased under the arches and used the car very little I'm confident the paint would have been fine.
Obviously if the arches have been fitted poorly allowing dirt, grit, and water to collect beneath them it's likely to be a different story.
