Purchase advise needed
Discussion
Currently looking at buying a new car... either a BMW 5 series or a Merc.
Went in an E class the other day and found it a bit plasticy.
I'm after a large diesel engined one.
I have seen a 4 door saloon type coupe model that looks good but dont know the merc models very well.
So what would you advise.. most of my driving is motorway 65k per year and have misses and two kids so i need a large 4 door saloon.
Your advise will be much appreciated
Thanks

The 4 door coupe your thinking of is a CLS, and the model you would want would be a 320cdi (3.0 V6 224bhp). The interior of the CLS is definately a lot nicer than the E-Class, you get a leather covererd dash and large areas of wood which look fantastic as long as you steer clear of the matt finishes.
The only thing I would say is that it's not a big 4-door car; it's big outside and the space in the front is similar to that in the E-Class but there are only 2 seats in the rear and it has quite a low roof, so can be a bit restricting for 6'+ passengers.
I think it's probably one of the best cars in the merc line-up and is definately a little less 'old-man' than the E-Class. There is a fairly recent thread on here with some pics of a few new happy owners cars.

My wifes car is in the PH classifieds. They are fantastic cars to drive ( and to my eyes to look at). Unfortunately she now wants 6 seats for the school run/ lets take the bikes scenario. Real shame! The only thing I would say is that it's not a big 4-door car; it's big outside and the space in the front is similar to that in the E-Class but there are only 2 seats in the rear and it has quite a low roof, so can be a bit restricting for 6'+ passengers.

Take a look at the Audi A6, I do about 2.5k a week in mine and I always get out as fresh as I got in. We have 3 teenage kids and there is loads of leg room and a huge boot. The 3.0 V6 diesel engine is the one to go for. Thoroughly recommended, quattro as well!
