Have a CLK 55 so same engine. Normally about 20mpg; once managed 34mpg on a timid motorway drive for 30 minutes (at 50-55mph). Urban is more like 15mpg. What did you expect? wink

Unless you've got a crazy modified CLK55 then it's not the same engine, the E55 is supercharged so probably going to be a bit worse on fuel....

I don't believe the E55 is as bad as the M5 on fuel; I have heard the M5 is pretty bad. Don't know why I think this - perhaps compare the road tests on autocarmagazine.co.uk (search around for a proper road test with full performance figures and data etc rather than a "first drive" type story).

Fair enough, I thought the engines would be similar (and therefore have similar fuel economy figures) or did they create a new V8 for the supercharged models?

Ehrm I'm pretty sure the V8s are the same old 3 valve-per-cylinder ones, just with a supercharger in the V of the 8, in the E55's case.

Well yes so same engine but the supercharger is probably wildly going to affect fuel consumption so rules out any comparison!

Would be interested to try either!

quite suprising, could have though 20/21 on a run considering the power on tap!

i had a 2003 E55 for a while. Mostly doing very short trips, and the computer showed about 18mpg. On a run it never got above 25. But if i put in even a modest amount of effort, getting into single digits was easy! I think the lowest was about 7.5 mpg.

Mine only ever used to take £60 to fill, so that makes it about 60L. It is the biggest complaint with the new M5. It's all to do with 50 50 weight distribution.

Been away for the weekend, so only just found this thread.

Had a W211 E55 for about 15 months now, and it's not at all bad fuel wise. Pretty similar to all the figures mentioned above I suppose, though I have had it to 26 mpg one morning when I wasn't in a rush. Also had it down to 8 mpg when I was...

Average over the last 8,000 miles has been 20.3 according to the trip which, considering the size and weight, I consider very acceptable.

Oh, fuel tank is 80l, though apparently some were fitted with 60l ones.

Servicing costs are worth shopping around for though, MB can be horrendously expensive.
