People asking about AMG tuning
Discussion
Gets asked occasionally, and this place seems to do it for n/a engines as well as the f/i ones. £450 sounds cheap.

That said, I'm not convinced - it seems weird how they get 'only' 29bhp extra out of the supercharged 5.5 but still manage to pull 29bhp from the n/a 5.5 litres.
Also an extra 25bhp from the old 280bhp 3.6 AMG sounds hopeful? The replacement 4.3 V8 made the same 305bhp (but then it was only 3 valve/cylinder I believe).

Oh they have normal Mercedes tuning too

25bhp from the 3.5 272bhp?
20-24bhp from the 3.2 engines?

Very interesting, I'd thought about this before as my current drive the C180K has the same engine as the C200K I believe, just in a lower state of 'tune' meaning I get 143bhp rather than the C200k's 163bhp, and I save myself a couple of thousand off the list price in the process. However, for £350 Angel can give me C200K power - is it really that simple? If so I'd consider it in a flash, I'm sure all of the other mechanical bits and pieces are designed for the higher power anyway, and 20bhp isn't really going to stress the car is it?
mmm..
mmm..
I'd definitely consider chipping any of the supercharged Mercs if it were me. They'd easily handle and extra 20bhp I'm sure. I bet the internals are no different on the various output units. However I've head some somewhat negative comments in teh BMW forum where I posted the link, on the validity of these power claims. So in short, get it done, but not at this place since their claims on a lot of other cars seem very optimistic? But the claims on the supercharged Mercs probably aren't because being forced induction they're a fair bit easier to get power out of.

This 'chipping' seems amazing - if it works. Just spoke with DMS who have quoted to replace the chip in my ML320 CDi - the power will increase from 244 hp to 275 hp plus a sizeable jump in torque (can't remember the figures, but was dead impressed!) PLUS benefit in fuel consumption of +7% and 10% on a run. Sounds all too good to be true. Undetectable so no warranty issues.
Question is if a man with a box can do this, why don't MB do at the factory and provide the standard car with more horses, torques and better MPG?
Any thoughts / answers?
Any one had it done?
Is it hype and a waste of £850?
Cheers

It's certiainly not hype in DMS's case - they're very well respected and the improvement is real.
I've never figured out myself why manufacturers would so under-rate their cars?? But then again thinking back to the Top Gear episode where they drove across Africa, I guess the cars have got to be built & set to deal with that sort of treatment, and when they're over 20 years old and haven't been servicd for years.
I guess in the UK with a newish car and getting it serviced properly, the difference just isn't much of a risk?
But all this said and done, I don't understand why economy would improve? I could understand it on a petrol as maybe they could run the ignition close to detonation but still within safe limits or something, but on a diesel..?

Well as with all engine tuning it's more about driveability.. you could add 1bhp but improve the whole torque curve. I've identical 200bhp and 122bhp Merc s and it's the 122bhp one that *feels* spritelier. So 25bhp might not sound much but if it's across the whole powerband it might be nice. Maybe like the difference between an E280 and a E320?
