Tyres for C280?

Hi all, I know very little about MB so would very much appreciate your help. 
My family car, 1994 C280 is in need of two new front tyres.
It's had Pirelli P6000s from new.
I'm a bit 'off' Pirelli at the moment (bad Jaguar experiences).
All I need is a tyre that is safe and long-lasting (it's no hoon-mobile).
As an alternative thought, the wheels are all a bit crap, despite looking after them, how about swapping them all for some nicer alloys?
Would really appreciate your recommendations.............
