SL55 on Eurohoon - WOW!
Discussion
Just got back from this year's Megahoon to Spain - 1600 miles on very challenging twisty and sweeping back roads - I've only had the SL for 5 months or so, so this was my opportunity to get to know how it goes and how to get the best out of it. All I can say is there is a seriously great car hidden inside. I followed PetrolTed in his track day prepared 911 GT3RS and kept up with him through tight twisty and bumpy roads, smooth sweeping fast bends, in fact all conditions. The handling and grip were unbelievably good for such a big car - at times it felt just like driving my Tamora, which is a really great handling car. I was flabbergasted by the depths of it's abilities, and there was hardly any brake wear, in fact the only evidence of hard use was the diminishing tread depth and a bit of power steering fluid seeping out of the reservoir pressure relief valve after a particularly hard driven section of mountain hairpins.
The heat build up did mean the supercharger shut itself down on occasions to cool off, but this wasn't too much of a problem overall. Great car! Go drive yours!

Hi Nubbin
Great to hear how good the SL fared, especially against such amazing machinery.
I think the SL55 is such an impressive, yet understated car! I own a couple of slightly older AMG's and they always bring a huge smile to my face when you start to push them. Hopefully one day I'll add a SL55 to the driveway too as reading your review makes me want one even more!
Ps. trip sounds amazing too!

Great to see another user of his SL55. Can't match Spain, but recently did a 700 mile weekend to the Ullapool region of North Scotland. Fantastic roads (even when so wet that the ESP light seemed to be on most of the time), enormous fuel consumption, but such a great noise especially with the roof down. Point and squirt and hold on round the bends - fantastic! Coming back via Tomintoul and Braemar, one of the highlights was dispatching 3 Mazda MX5s travelling briskly in convoy - all in one big blat of acceleration. Just so easy......
I've done some of the roads you mention in my Tamora , but I want to go up to Scotland again in the SL! I've just spoken to MB Sheffield, who feel the supercharger issue is a safety feature and I will have to put up with it - but it's never happened in the UK. I managed 17.2 mpg over 36 hours of driving, average speed 46mph, which included town traffic, junctions etc. Quick car!
