Merceds CL 500 buying advice- 2002 model
Discussion
I have been looking at these cars to advise a friend of mine what to buy next , and i am wondering, these cars are pretty cheap now, has anyone in here owned one, and if yes what is the mpg like? any reliability issues? what is the best colour to go for? WHy are so many blinged up ?
edit to add, what about CLK 320 cabriolet 2003 model, whats the best car, CL500 or CLK320, factoring in depreciation, fun factor, status, service costs?
cheers

CL500........Nice motorway car, I got around 24mpg on a motorway run but only 14 mpg around town, lots of toys, massage seats, command etc etc.......I think the build quality of the interior in particular isnt up to standard for a £80K car, electrics can give problems, I have replaced an air con pump on a 90K car (noisy bearing).....colours, silver and black, seem to be favourite........great value for money but buy carefully!
The Main thing to look for is rust....I'm not kidding....rear wheel arch lips and also look at the C Pillar where it joins the rear wing..if you see some small bubbles here it can be a nightmare to rectify as the rust is actually spreading up from under the rear wing.
Its caused by the plastic moulding strip rubbing between the C Pillar and the rear wing.
If the car is otherwise good but has some rust in these areas you could always buy it and then take it to your local Mercedes dealer after 6 months of ownership and ask them to put in a rust claim for you. They should cover it under their Goodwill scheme.
The rust itself is not deep seated rust....normally its just surface rust under the paint, especially that found on the wheel arch lips.

thanks, if i test drive one what should i be looking for?
the ones i am looking at cost about £20,000 with 40k miles
Make sure all the electric toys work, rust as stated above, kerbed alloys, noisy air con compressors, check the operation of the windows (they should lower and raise slightly when u open and shut the door)......Haggle hard there are plenty about the ones i am looking at cost about £20,000 with 40k miles
