Mercedes model name help!!
Discussion
Can someone please explain to me Mercedes model names.
I understand the classes A, B, C, E, S etc is basically size of the vehicle but I don't understand why there is then SLK and SL, or CLS and CL.
Also what do the numbers mean, what's the difference between a CLK270, CLK320 or a CLK200?
I understand BMW model names like a 328 is a 3 Series 2.8, is Mercedes similar?
All help would be much appreciated!

Shocking! Comparing Mercedes to BMW! Mercedes started that system as they did with most things!I understand the classes A, B, C, E, S etc is basically size of the vehicle but I don't understand why there is then SLK and SL, or CLS and CL.

Not quite as simple as that I understand the classes A, B, C, E, S etc is basically size of the vehicle but I don't understand why there is then SLK and SL, or CLS and CL.
C = Four door saloon/estate
CL = Two door luxury coupe, based on S-class
CLS = Four door saloon/coupe, based on E-class
CLK = Two door coupe/cab, based on C-class
S = Four door luxury saloon
SL = Two door convertible
SLK = Two door convertible (smaller than SL)
etc, etc.

The numbers [kind of] relate to the engine size. A 270 is a 2.7 Diesel, 320 = 3.2 petrol (although there's now a 320CDi (which is actually a 3.0) and the petrol is now a 350, 3.5); the 200 is a 1.8 Kompressor. Perfectly clear, no? The numbering through the 70s, 80s and 90s used to refer to engine size.
eg. I had a 1991 230E....200-series E-Class with a 2.3 engine
BUT....
In the past, the number denoted the model - 600-series, 170-series of the 60s.
Also rencently, Mercedes has kept the numbers, but they don't denote engine size. For example the post facelift W203 C-Class came in C180 Kompressor, C200 Kompressor and C230 Kompressor, all sharing a 1.8 litre 4 cylinder engine, with differing power ratings.
The new 500 cars (latest CL, S, GL, facelift SL, E, and now ML) all now contain a 5.5 litre, not a 5.0 as you may expect. The S/SL/CL 600 actually contain 5.5 litre V12s.
The new breed of 280 numbered petrol cars are actually 3 litre units.
And so it goes on, so nowadays, the numbers give away less about engine size than they did.

C = Compact
E = Executive
S = Something luxury in German
SL is the most important one though that's actually relevant to anything, it stands for 'Sports Light'.
Mercedes SL's now are heavy lumps, and at one point they were going to rebadge them 'SH' for 'Sports Heavy'. These plans were scapped when it came to badging up the new SH 1 Turbo due to be unveiled at next years Geneva motorshow.

The fun bit is selling badges, a C220 badge comes as a CLK 220 badge to cover both models and save a bit of money. When a bodyshop paints a boot lid they replace the badges, on a C220 they always forget to dispose of the 'LK'. Therefore eagle eyed spotters may see the odd CLK C Class pootling around.
Off Topic, BRABUS boot badges are now availiable from your local MB dealer (Part no QB21100014) for £60 if anyone fancies going mad.
