Hi all,

My father has purchased a CLS and wants to convert to 3 seats at the rear. Does anyone know of a simple conversion for this?

Thinking out loud would the rear of a standard e-class centre console fit to get rid of the hump?

I saw a W140 Coupe, which had a W140 Saloon triple rear seat, so I would guess its possible in the CLS, using E-Class components.

The only thing which I can think of as being a problem, is the seat belt fitment. Depending on if the W211 E-Class uses a 3 point belt or lap belt for the central seat, you'll have fixing points to attach/weld in.

I would imagine there to be a legal implication of having the three rear seats. The CLS would only be crash tested with 4 people so insurance may also be an issue.

Definately not something I would reccomend, but also something I would be interested to find out the answer to.

From working at Mercedes , my Knowledge is that because of the seat belt fittings there is no aftermarket or factory fit for 3 seat belts in the back of a CLS , they are classed as 4 seaters only. There was talk from the factory of producing a CLS with 3 seats in the back but neede to go through crash tests so could be a while to be released and then only on new CLS's.

This is true.

I wouldnt recommend trying to bodge a seat in from another vehicle, even though its basicly a 211 E Class i still couldnt see a seat from that fitting in, and then you have still got the seat belt issues.

The E Class console is completly different and will not mate up to the dashboard.

And dont forget any messing around with the car will probably have an adverse affect on the warranty.

Perhaps he should of thought of that before buying it confused

Most stupid thing Merc ever did was to make this a 4 seater... I have a baby and her grandparents come to stay quite often. Therefore we need 5 seats...if we only needed 4 then we'd buy a sports coupe. The CLS would be the answer to so many families' issue that they dont want a boring saloon such as a 5 series. Most then go and buy daft cayannes and other daft jeeps so that they are not seen as oridinary and boring. The CLS would have been the perfect alternative. Ben-get me the product manager's name at MB UK and I can sit him down and explain this to him!

So what happens when you have a second child, will you think all 5 seater cars are stupid? biggrin

Respect laugh

The CLS was designed as a coupe, and all Merc coupes have 4 seats, just because it has 4 doors doesnt make it less of one. Its just one of those things in life, if you have a family, chances are you cant have a coupe.

Er yes? Dont understand your point?

Why make a car a 4 seater when it can obviously accomodate 5 people?

TO differentiate it from a E class?

I think the styling and the price do that!! And on that logic why not just make it into a 2 door!

That would make it a CL rival, and in a market where no one else produces a 4 door coupe, Merc have the market to themselves.

Ok-why not make it 8 inches lower so that only 5ft 6" and shorter can drive it..then it will be different to all other Mercs!
Utterly stupid to make a 5 seater into a 4 seater for no reason other than as a differentiator. I understand why manufacturers make 2 door cars when they could be 4 door (ie aesthics, design, lifestyle statement) but to actually take something like a 5th seat away is daft. Daft enough to loose them a sale to me anyway!
That would make it a CL rival, and in a market where no one else produces a 4 door coupe, Merc have the market to themselves.

Because it's more comfortable and spacious in the back of a CLS than E class.

my 500E has only 2 rear seats and when people get in they generally comment on how nice it is in the back.

you will find that the cls-class does not have the option to convert to a 5 seater vehicle. if he wants the extra rear seat then he should consider the s-class, but expect to fork out a lot more doshhttp://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/10.gif
