Hi there

Looking at replacing my 911 (964) C4 with something a little more refined. The first generation CLK AMG's seem excellent value at £13k-£15k.

Would anybody be able to give me a little bit of insight into what they are like to live with (12,000 miles a year) and running costs etc?

Many thanks,
James

Probably reasonably modern in the interior compared with your 964. The W208 has a few corrosion issues so look carefully. Engine is reasonably bullet proof, and gearbox only comes as an auto. Merc do discounted maintenance schemes for cars over 4 years old. Insurance will depend on where you live, how many miles and your driving record. Try A-Plan - they've been very good for me personally. MPG will be around 14-18 in town with 26-27 on a run. Expect to average around 20mpg in my experience.

Usual things apply - buy on condition, service record ,condition, specification, condition, mileage, and condition. Oh, did I mention to check out condition?

Hi James, I've a 993 Carrara 4 and a W08 CLK55 AMG, just been to Croft for a track day and recently been to Le-Mans in the Porsche, you cannot compare the cars, one is a tight focused drivers car the other is a soft very fast barge of a cruiser. The Merc is quiet has a uninvolved drive with a terrible 2 to 3 second throttle delay on kick down, unless you fit a 'Sprint Booster'. I get a heavy right foot 16mpg for both cars. The Merc revs faster and 'lives' on a sea of torque which is phenomenal. The Mercs beauty is the quality of the gear inside the car, the Porsches beauty is the quality of the gear hidden under the car. I love both cars and drive either (or my Audi Quattro) to suit what mood I'm in. Couldn't say which is the fastest.
