Hi everyone, its my first post here so hope it goes ok. My wife has 1999 SLK 34000 miles, one prev owner and v well looked after, full MB service history. When we were in the Ardennes about 8 weeks ago we stopped to admire view at mountain viewing spot, went to go, car completely dead, nothing at all. Walk to village, struggle with french, arr recovery, walk 1 mile back to car try once more and away it goes, about 1 1/2 hrs having passed. Rest of holiday ran like a dream. Last week went to start it in garage at home, fan ran like demon, everything else dead. AA man comes out, tried hard could not get anything to happen, recovered to MB dealer. They say Engine management computer failed and install a new one, ( £800 gulp !!). Drives home 30 miles a dream, go to start it the next day and same as before, fan runs like a demon, everything else dead. Where do I go from here ? obviously dealer will have to come and pick it up, but what could be wrong ? Should i get my money back for the ECU. Thanks guys.

They certainly won't give you your cash back as they will state the ECU was broken and it needs more work....

New ECU and same problem. I would just ell them mis diagnosis and demand the money back and the old ECU. It's obviously something else...unless they gave you the "old" ECU by mistake!!

Get your money back..........you took it in with a fault...they stiffed u for £800.....fault still there. They have failed to fix your vehicle don't let em get away with it. I find a good trick is to visit the dealer on a busy day and if I don't get my way make a real scene so all the prospective customers can hear...it gets results.

As for the issue with your car you could maybe supply more detail. When you say fan runs but everything is dead - no ignition lights? starter motor does not crank? what fan r u on about the ventilation system or the radiator fan? If you are more specific it might help to diagnose

It doesn't work like that. They won't have kept old ECU , so how can you prove mis daignosis???

He did not take the car in to get a new ECU he took it in to get the intermittent starting problem fixed. The dealer decided it was the ECU causing the fault and this clearly is not the case. The car still has the fault there is noting to prove.

The more you let these muppets get away with there overpriced half ass approach to vehicle maintenance the more they do it. Go in there and talk to the service manager and ask him to explain how an expensive ECU change did not fix the problem.

Hi Everyone, Thanks for all the help, I've been away for a few days so could not reply.

Have to say very impressed with the dealer, they came and recovered the car, 35 miles each way, no problem when I told them it was at their expense. They rang back later that day to say that they had traced the problem to a relay before the EMU. Without asking they said they would refund the full cost of the previous bill, nearly £1000. and would raise a new invoice for £250 for supplying and replacing the relay. They would leave the new EMU in place as it was of no use to them, (matched to chassis number apparently ). They also delivered the car back. Ok I know that is expensive for a relay but overall was relieved !!
Very pleased and full marks to Vikings of Canterbury.

People on the MB forums always speak well of Vikings - they're one the 'old school' independant Mercedes dealers who lost the franchise in MB UK's big shake up a few years ago. They're now an MB Authorised Repairer.
