Soon to be Lexus defector - first post - Hi Guys

Thinking of getting a SL55 AMG Jan 04 on a 53 plate - it has SL65 wheels (two piece) and what looks like a SL65 front bumper with meshed vents ahead of the wheels. Apart from that it seems std with ally trim and a good spec.

Query is - was it a ltd edition (its a designo colour grey) or maybe its had a few bits added which would put me off.

Car is georgeous and immaculate at £53k / 35k

Other option is a CLS55 AMG but they look so underwhelming (as an AMG) and the wheels are so poor - needs 19" at least - cant find one that looks the part - and most look jacked up with loads of space between tyre and arch

Cheers
Dave

At the time there was an 'AMG Performance Pack' it was a £8,500 option.

It had the following :

AMG front apron with larger air intakes and additional oil cooler – ensures that the engine runs at its optimal operating temperature

AMG sport suspension based on ABC with sporty parameters
New composite brake discs measuring 380 x 36mm at the front, incl. ESP adaptation

19'' AMG multi-piece alloy wheels in a twin-spoke design (front: 8.5 x 19 with 255/35 tyres, rear: 9.5 x 19 285/30 tyres)

Increase in maximum speed limitation (Vmax) to 300 km/h (approx. 186 mph)

The wheels on 65's were dark in the centre, I think the alloys on this were just silver.

It was based on the F1 SL safety car at the time.

Thanks for the detailed heads up

It must be that then - the louvres ahead of the front wheels have a black mesh over them - I have not seen this on anything else. Trim is a bit low rent silver / ally ? car is a bit higher than the average but I think I have to have it!!

My 53000 miler has gone in today to have the supercharger pulley and belt tensioners replaced under warranty - go and listen to the engine from cold - if there's a squeak on acceleration, and/or constant squealing, the pulley bearings are on their way out - a common fault I believe. unless there's an extended warranty, walk away. (£££££!)

I wouldn't say it's a common problem as such.

They can 'chirp' instead of 'squeak' from the supercharger clutch.

Temporary fix here : http://forum.mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=6...

hehe Just waiting for the car to come back from it's "permanent" fix. It'll be nice not to spend the first 5 minutes of every journey wincing smile

Mine's back - no squeak on acceleration, no chirping - and it feels stronger and quicker - but probably just my imagination unless the belt was slipping on the supercharger pulley....

Going to do the deal later this week - can some nice informed person on here advise the recall mods this should have had (Jan 04) also I am wary of the discs and how would I know if they had not previously put standard discs on ? (Im a trusting soul - NOT)

Cheers

Any joy yet DS ? Let's have some pictures up, and fingers crossed the weather turns so you can get the roof off !

Sadly common sense prevailed and I have purchased a CLS 55 AMG (6k miles 12 months old) as "the family" demanded 4 seats (for now)

I get it next week and its a great motor but I doubt the roof will come off easily!

Anything I should know about them ?

Cheers
DS
