I changed the battary on a friends SLK yesterday (R reg) stood well back on ignition and all was fine, started first time. Then as i walked from the bonet to boot to collect my tools the engine coughed a couple of times and died? Now this car is left stagnant for ages and is used very rarely (hence flat battery). Now the engine is turning over with the power from the battery however not starting. Is it the immoboliser ? MERC said to bring it to them but wanted to ask here first. ANY positive information would be very helpful

Could be a bunch of stuff. (I assume there is fuel in the tank)

Fuel Pump fuse
Ignition fuse #11
Fuel Pump
Crank Position Sensor
Mass Airflow sensor is dirty (clean it and see if that helps) reset before restart

Another trick is to disconnect the battery and leave for around 15 minutes and then connect up again. DO NOT HAVE IGNITION ON for this. This has the effect of resetting the EMS (like powering a printer off and on).

You could also throw this to a worldwide benz audience at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170-slk-class they love this kind of thing...
