Anyone know of a gearbox specialist?
Discussion
I have a colleague in the office who has a Merc which has been diagnosed with a dead gearbox. It's an E500. The dealer wants a large lump of cash to sort it, but in my experience all that will be done is the work will go to a specialist and a large increase will be put on their work by the dealer. So cutting to the chase, does anyone have a recommendation for a such a specialist? Ideally the box would be swapped out for reconditioned unit, but does anyone provide this service?
Thanks,
Steve.

I wouldn't go anywhere else: http://www.hardyengineering.co.uk/
Mercedes offer replacement gearboxes that are often very competitively priced. I'd ask a few specialists and compare warranties before deciding
A lot may depend on what E500 it is and where in the country it is. George Fraser in West London is a gearbox specialist and a highly-respected independent garage
