CLK 230 failed NCT(MOT) on emissions....help!

Just took my CLK 230K for it's NCT, the Irish equivalent of the MOT test and it failed on emissions, Lambda Emissions were 3.5 times the limit. Has this happened to anyone before? What was the root cause? Was it the Lambda sensor or am I looking at a new Catalytic Converter?

Take it for a good hot long thrashing before changing cats, 9/10 it fixes em
