I just bought a ML 500 and it seems bloody brilliant, however a family member who's into off roaders (for towing his caravan) recons they aren't any good.

Should I worry?

It's my family car (7 seater as there are 6 of us) and I have just come from a rather terrible experience with the simply awfull quality Chysler Voyagers. I run an M3 everyday so I can live with highish running costs, but I do want good build quality and reliablility.

DO you need it to tow caravan's off road? Has your family member ever owned one?

I suspect no to both. You like it. It's yours. Sounds good to me smile

On a serious note, I know of no issues with these cars other than consumables and I'm sure you're expecting those...

It's strange that your family member should think that. A relative of mine has a previous shape ML320 for towing his caravan and he never stops raving about how great it is.

He previously had a string of hot manual saloons and was seriously dubious about the whole SUV thing and automatic transmission in particular when I suggested trying the ML. But he's been converted and reckons that it's the perfect vehicle for his needs. The massive traction and automatic transmission makes moving the caravan a doddle, and the V6 is wonderfully responsive and can pull it on cruise control for hours without even dropping a gear.

The only downside is the fuel consumption, but you'd be hard pushed to find a car that fits the towing bill and returns better economy.

Ye Diesel... took me a while to get used to it but it can do over 30 mpg and so I don't have to spend my life in petrol stations filling it up when the petrol engine can just about do low 20's the 500 even worse.

As compensation I have an AMG SLK which is definately petrol driving

Well the family member has the Kia 4x4... he got it brand new and it broke down twice in the first month lol.

I suspect it is just sour grapes especially as he thought I'd spent much more that I did on my car. But I couldn't afford to take the chance.

The funniest thing was my wife was unable to keep up with me in the ML on the return trip.....and she was driving my M3!

PS yes I do know the M3 could take the ML, but not if your a girl that doesn't know what 'redlining' it means lol.

Yeah, I was just joshing. The 320CDI is a pretty tidy motor, and very well suited to the ML. It's just a shame they withheld it from the original ML and offered only the coarse 270CDI.

So.... which vehicle returns the best mileage, SLK(55?) AMG or ML320 CDI?

I think u know the answer to that one - it is an SLK32 AMG by the way.

I am looking at the brabus upgrade for the ML "BRABUS PowerXtra D6 (III) performance kit, 272 hp / 200 kW. Max. torque 590 Nm." sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, just got to sell the car to afford it wink
