I see that E55's are beginning to look good value (£30-40k for a sensible one). Any pitfalls? Thanks

Good car, love mine.

Don't expect it to handle like a sports car (after all it is a four door five seater, but even so a bit slushier than an RS6 or M5)Traction cuts in a bit early as well for my liking, butg I've learnt to live with that.Brakes take a bit of getting used to (SBC is weird, at least to me)

Having said that, it still brings a smile to my face every time I use it. Acceleration is nice and surprises lots of people.

Go for as late a model as you can afford, but make sure it's got FMBSH as this will hopefully ensure that all recalls *should* have been done and Mobilio life will be valid.

Mine died once (30,000 miles....Throttle Valve Actuator) but MB were very quick to sort it out They had to wait for the part so delivered a courtesy car the same afternoon for me to use. Another reason for FMBSH.

In all, comfy, quick and quiet, but try also to get as many toys as you can. COMAND is desirable, heated and cooling seats also (especially if they're the massage ones) Keyless go makes for a big grin as well.

Get it bought, you know you want to

a friend of mine is thinking of getting a E55 to replace his 996 turbo auto. he has seen a silver e55 on a 03 plate that he liked but isn't 100% sure about a few things and doesn't know enough about the car. a few questions he asked me; he isn't really a proper petrol head.

couple of questions;
how big the fuel tank on the E class? he says the tank on the turbo is very small + 17/18mpg on a run means stopping for fuel quite often. Does the E55 do 20mpg or more on a run(70-90mph)? can you get 300-350miles from a tank on a motorway run?

he likes the 911 turbo performance and ultimately wants something that offers the same performance (E55 i would imagine offers similar performance?)

how much does it cost to service?

he finds driving the turbo to be alittle to raw (noisey) on the motorway (he is 29!), he thinks the E55 would be much more refined. which i'm sure it is! imho i didn't think the his turbo was unrefined at all!

cheers

Tank holds 80 litres IIRC. I get about 350 miles from this. My average mpg over the last few thousand miles has been 20.5 Not a lot, but about 30% of this has been stop start stuff round town, so not to painful really.

Official times are 0 - 60 in 4.7, though it depends where you read these. It is quite nippy though
Limited top end of 155, but gets there pretty quickly (allegedly)
479 BHP Merc figure, though most agree that it's 500 as in the CL. Advertised as lower to keep the MB pecking order.
Torque is incredible at over 500Lb/ft.

My last one was a *B* service at £582.76 + VAT, but this included changing brake fluid (Not a DIY job with SBC)
It didn't include plugs (they wanted £350 for these, it's only done 30,000 miles FFS)

Thanks for the help. I'm struggling to find one which compares well price wise to Glasses. Funny, when I'm selling a big engined Merc I can't get book but when I'm looking to buy, they are all over.
