does anyone have any recommendations on which one to go for? I'm looking for a 300SE at the mo.

The 300 engine is shared with the E-class and so is cheaper to run than the V8 models. Goes OK too, I believe. Great engine and very easy to work on. The V8s have more power but not by a great margin (though I've only driven a Y-reg 380). The 560 is probably fun though, with 300bhp.

There are diesels which are popular with US merc enthusiasts but not sure they exist in the UK.

There's also a 260SE which is rare (not sure if it was sold in the UK?) and possibly getting a bit small in the engine department.

Some 300s have hub caps - no alloys. They look ok but I would fit some 15-hole alloys from a breaker/ebay etc.
