Next AMG gruntwagen arrives
It's a new CL, with 738lb ft of torque
These are the first pictures of the new Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG, set to make its debut at the New York motor show in April.
As you might have guessed from the badge, the CL65 uses the mighty AMG version of the Mercedes six litre twin turbo V12, with 604bhp and 738lb ft of torque. So despite a kerb weight well in excess of 2000kg, expect a 0-60mph time in the low fours and a theoretical top speed - without the 155mph limiter in place - easily north of 200mph.
The ‘65’ sits above the already rapid CL63 AMG, and the not exactly slow CL600, and will probably cost around
£150,000.Discussion
Fantastically silly cars! But they must a hoot to drive
One thing I wanna know though......usually when an engine is moved to the next generation of a model, its givena power hike. The Bi Turbo 600 engine was so, in the change over to the current CL/S-Class, so why have they not done anything with the 65 engine? OK you could argue it doesn't need it, but surely you could argue that point with the normal 600?

When more figures come through the official channels at the New York show it might be a few horsepower more, but I doubt it'll be anything significant. There's always the long-term health of the gearbox to consider - this car sticks with the 5 speed auto apparently, instead of the latest 7 speeder - and then there's the SLR problem too. MB don't want to be seen to be outpacing their supercar...although AMG might have different ideas...

Isn't it already artificially held back due to the torque being too much for the gearbox?

Yes, I believe so. Although the poor old rear tyres are already up against it. Crazy...
A stunning vehicle, if a vehicle were king of the quarter of a mile and Autobahn, I bet this would be it. I wouldn’t be to keen to give chase against a Lotus Elise on some back roads though.
Moderation would be the key, all too easy to give it the full 738 lb-ft of torque and end up driving yourself off the road when the safety systems are overwhelmed so quickly.
As TG quite rightly pointed out recently, it appears to be relatively easy to increase the power on some of these engines; you just have to have the chassis to cope with it. Very easy to go the cheap route and add some fancy electronics that simply slow things down to a point where you’re slower through corners than lesser powered vehicles with better grip and a rigid chassis.
Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG vs. Audi S4 anyone?
