New owner SL55 AMG
Discussion
Collected a 2004 SL55 from my local M-B dealership on Sunday. Have only driven about 120mls so far but car is absolutely awesome. I previously drove a 4.5 litre TVR Chimeara and am a devoted TVR fan in my late 50's.
I enjoyed the rawness of the TVR drive but this was not shared by my wife who is disabled and so needed something at least as quick but much more comfortable and capable of carrying a wheelchair on occasions. Looked at Porche (911 and Cayman) plus Ferrari 550 and Aston Martin DB7 but settled on SL55.
I live in the East Midlands and am interested in learning of any gatherings of M-B owners and SL55's in particular. Any info and advice on the car - for instance can you use a trickle charger through the cigar lighter to keep the batteries topped up if car is left in garage all week.

Peter,
Congrats - what a lovely car!
I don't think you'll be able to use a trickle charger via the cigarette lighter, as the lighter socket is only powered on with the first turn of the ignition key.
You may wish to check with your dealer. Given the multitude of ECUs on your car, there may be a special procedure, not sure though...
On my SL (R129 as opposed to 230), the battery is in the boot, so I ran the croc clips type connector through a skilfully drilled hole in the trim when needed, I run the cable into the boot and it charges the battery directly.
HTH,
Greg

Hi Peter, I have the BiTubo SL which is often left for long periods of time 4 weeks plus.I only once had to use the key for entry when the boot battery lost charge after 5 weeks, however the the starter battery under the bonnet was fine and started the car.On speaking to M Benze they said the 'gel battery' would need a proper charge then should be fine,I left the charger on for 3 days and have had no problems since. As you have just bought the car make sure there are no cracks radiating from the drill holes in the front discs, insist on them being changed if there are.
Regards Mark.

Try the Chatsworth Pistonheads/TVR meet in April (Thread here) - I am picking up my newly purchased SL55 this Friday, and I will hopefully be popping down to Chatsworth. Maybe see you there...
