Hi All,

Bit of a strange one, Ive noticed of late (since having 19's fit), that when im on the motorway my car feels pretty uneasy, kind of like driving in very heavy wind or on a really wet road. Its almost as if its sliding from side to side and needs constant correction to keep it in the middle of a lane. Could this due to having big wheels o a big car with soft suspension? Ive just had my wheels balanced which I though would have fixed it, any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Could be that your tracking is out / incorrect tyre pressure.

Might also be tramlining. Big wheels don't help ride quality but they should track straight on the m-way.

Should tracking have been fixed when the wheels were balanced last week or is that a seperate issue?

Do your wheels fit within the specifications outlined in your driver's manual?

If they don't, then thats why.

The manual only talks about 16" wheels so in that respect, no. The wheels are made by Mandrus, which like Brabus and AMG are made only for Mercedes. Will see how it goes during the next week of driving and may have to take it back the the garage to have the tracking checked.

Make sure they are the correct wheels for your model, the wrong offset WILL have this affect.

I struggle with lorry ruts as my car seems to just be too narrow to sit in them so dances from one to another, I just sit in lane 2 instead.

Balancing has nothing to do with how true a car drives, you can have no wheel balancing at all and a car will still drive in a straight line. Wider wheels will 'tramline' more than skinny ones will its the pay off I'm afraid!
Get the tracking checked and at the same time get them to check all of your front suspension bushes and trackrod ends, if these are worn then your suspension will be 'slack' (larger wheels will be more sensative to this) .
