A new 'base' for base model Mercedes, it seems they invented the C160 a while ago, only available in sport coupe form mercifully.

What is most amazing about it though, is that (thank god) it's not a 1.6, but the same supercharged 1.8 as the 180, 200 and 230. In the 230 it makes 190bhp, in the 160 it makes 120bhp. HOW DO THEY MAKE IT SO LOW!? I mean these days you'd struggle to make a naturally aspirated 1.8 make only 120bhp, let alone one with a supercharger!

Presumably it's just for cost purposes as all engines are more or less the same, and the supercharger is barely doing much, and doesn't even trade off the weight increase of having it there?

Does that mean that all of the abovementioned engines are basically the same, but in different states of tune?

If so, then in theory you could just buy the C160 and have some chipping/remapping work done to up the power. This might work out cheaper, I remember looking at the cost of a remap on my C180K, around £500 IIRC to take it up to similar power/torque as a C200K, which was at least £1k more on list price.

Maybe the supercharger runs constantly in vacuum at minus 1 bar !!! Thus sucking 30bhp back out. Imagine driving the thing fully loaded up a hill on a motorway.....I would rather remove my own eyes with a kitchen utensil.

I think the C160 is the same 1.8 as the C180 K, but without the supercharger rolleyes. You don't see many, unless there all debadged. Not listed on the MB website anymore. I think it was an attempt at making the Sports Coupe compete with A3's and 1-series on price.
