1998 'S' reg E240 auto reverse light problem
Discussion
Hi,
My E240 auto has recently developed 2 problems:
1) Rust aorund the front and rear wheel arches
2) No reverse lights while Reverse is engaged.
I will tackle the rust problem later on as I have just realised that rust is quite common in the 1998/1999 E-class.
The Reverse lights problem which I would like to tackle immediately so I took it to my local official Merc service for the usual service and the check-up of the reverse light problem.
They reckon that there's a leak in the auto selection module which has flooded the reverse light connector and this is why they failed to light up. They think I need to replace the whole auto selection module. I don't know the cost (they never called me back) yet but I don't think it will be cheap.
I wonder if someone has experienced the same problem and if there's a less expensive way to fix the problem.

They don't need to replace the entire selector unit, it just needs disassembling and cleaning. A job which you can do yourself with help from this thread:

They will need to replace the seal on the cable exiting the autobox. But then again, you can do that yourself as well.
