Mercedes offers AMG upgrades
Chassis, drivetrain tweaks for AMG cars
Mercedes-Benz will make available a special AMG performance package ex-factory for the 514bhp E63 AMG saloon.
It consists, said the company, of a number of technical components to enhance handling dynamics, motorsport potential and individuality. Available from March 2007, the package was developed at the AMG Performance Studio in Affalterbach, and the vehicles are built at the DaimlerChrysler production plant in Sindelfingen.
Specifics
- 18-inch 5-spoke multipiece AMG alloy wheels, painted sterling silver, front wheels size 8.5 x 18 with 245/40 R 18 tyres, rear wheels size 9.5 x 18 with 265/35 R 18 tyres
- AMG performance suspension with firmer tuning, based on AIRMATIC DC
- Multi-disc rear locking differential with 40 per cent locking effect, providing more traction when accelerating out of corners
- AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel in leather/black Alcantara with silver-coloured aluminium shift paddles
Using various higher-performance components, the performance package for the already rapid E63 AMG adds more dynamic handling and performance, according to Mercedes.
It's aimed at what Mercedes called "ambitious sports car enthusiasts who want to have the option of using their AMG performance model on closed-circuit racetracks". and is priced in Germany at €7,140 (about £4,700).
Mercedes said that the AMG Performance Studio was also able to offer similar options for other AMGs, including the SLK55, SL55, CLS63 and CLK63.
..however if these performance extras are available for the C-Class I'm more than happy to lend them my BLACK car to put them on if they can't get their hands on any other colour than silver for their press car
I believe they also sell them in Black and a variety of different shades of grey as well.
Though it has to be said, they dont actually look very good in other colours. I saw an SL55 that was red once, so I can understand why everyone goes for Silver or Black
This means that the vast majority of cars that they sell are specced by the dealers who I suspect pre-order the cars they think they can sell to the majorities easiest, and which will be easiest for them to sell on at trade-in/end of PCP deal time.
I'm sure they're not the only manufacturers that do this though, there's an awful lot of black/silver/grey BMWs and Audis on the road too.
I'd heard they were dropping it in favour of turbocharging. Either way, I'd have thought one of the best upgrades for tracking a Merc would be about -500kgs in most cases (flame suit on ). Don't get me wrong, I love the look of most of them and certainly wouldn't say no if I was handed the keys, especially SL55/SL65s, but with the former being about 1900kgs IIRC surely even huge AMG brakes would be cooked in a couple of laps stopping that weight?
I know luxury comes at a price (both £s and lbs), but why are they seemingly so heavy?
we should be thankful that mercedes has finally admitted that some drivers prefer an LSD to ESP....
as to newly announced - these were available to spec from last september.
That seems to be a German thing. I live here in Zurich, and just about every car on the road is either Gray, Silver, or Black. I used to love cars in all those colors, but now find them booorrrring. Even all the Porsches are the same boring colors.
I have been trying to find my wife a Red or Blue Mini Cooper Automatic for eight months. They don't exist. We finally had to settle for a black one. Ugh !
Supposedly the 6.3 AMG is still an absolute monster of an engine, despite not being supercharged. I've never been lucky enough to drive either, but I could imagine the lower-revving supercharged 5.5, while interesting at first, could get a bit tiresome what with the traction issue...
But hey I just wish I had more than a frankly pathetic sounding 177 lb ft!! How things have moved on....
