Hi I am thinking of buying a 52/03 reg SL55 AMG and looking for lots of advice really!

Firstly could anyone tell me what the standard equipment list for a car of that vintage would have been, and secondly what "must have" options I need to look out for on a used car to prevent me from having my trousers pulled down come resale time.

I probably intend to buy from a main dealer for peace of mind, assuming a 52 plate car in the right colour with the right options and say 40k on the clock, what would be a good price to pick one up for and what kind of depreciation can I expect to suffer over say 12 months and 10k miles?

Hi T5, taking the last point first, about £8000. Best extras for resale are pan roof, keyless go, Bose, pdc,19" alloys are prefered. Also, no more than 2 owners, Best colours [resale wise] are, Met black, silver. Deffo' no reds.Cars can eat discs, so ask for new set if any sign cracking from the drill holes.Car must have MB history.Check boot carefully for water leak probs, some early cars were a nightmare!!Try and pay mid £40ks,this time of year deals are available, come spring prices will be firmer.

Regards Mark.

Cheers for the reply Markbe, I am surprised it would loose as much as 8k, in reality come resale time is an SL55 worth that much more than a standard SL500 assuming same year miles and spec?

Glasses values them 10k apart. I would say if you can buy a SL55 at a good price, and then in a year sell at a good price, you may not lose much at all.A good rule is to buy in winter and sell in spring-summer.

Standard equipment was pretty good, other than that as markbe said about the accessories, although I'd insist on COMAND as well. Didn't get this with my MB and it's the main regret with it. APS50 is good, but not as good. Spoke to a dealer who reckoned COMAND can add up to a grand extra. Don't think comfort seats were standard either, so they'd be a bonus as well. Heated, cooled & massaging. Distronic was available in that year as well.

I think basically get as many toys as you can with it, then enjoy it

I recently saw an advert in Autotrader describing the SL55 on sale as "one of the rare (only 500) UK cars" - what on Earth does that mean? Are U.K. spec cars somehow different?

Looking for one myself at the moment, I think they represent great value now, 200mph for £40k thumbup

this one seems quite nice, seems to have the SL65s alloys to, or am I wrong?

Great advice Markbe, thanx

Same style alloys, but 65's are black, ideally a low mileage car would be best.

Not rare. There are a least a couple thousand in the UK. How ever, there are only a couple of hundred 600SLs
