SLK230 Auto - immobiliser problem

My friend's died last night part way round a roundabout. AA were there in 10 mins and diagnosed it as an immobiliser problem. Is this likely to be right, and is it a cheap / quick fix?

My immobiliser went wrong on my E320 back in February. (My car had to be put on the back of a low loader )

In the end my immobiliser was reset, and a new receiver (for the remote locking) was fitted. Although I can't remember exactly how much, I think it was between £100 and £200 IIRC
