Mercedes 4-matic

Can anyone please tell me how this system actually works?
I've heard varying opinions on how this system actually works, and whether it is any good.
I first saw it on W124 300E's and understand its been on the W210 E55 and other E-Classes, S-Classes, the ML- and GL-Classes.
I've heard its a permanent system, with a 50/50 power split to the front and rear. I've also heard it's permanent 4WD up to 30mph and then reverts to RWD. The final opinion on how this system works is that its RWD until they lose traction, then the 4WD system kicks in.
Which of these is actually true? Are they reliable? (I've heard they're not on W124s)
Just any information you can give my to absorb into my memory would be greatly received
Thanks
Darren
