what kind of money are they for a nice one? are they much more than the earlier 300 sel?
probably the same, maybe less?
Just happened to be looking at some auction values earlier today:
www.practicalclassics.co.uk/auction/by-id/659171166
Couple of 300SEL 6.3s there I think
www.classicdriver.com/uk/find/4100_results.asp?bsubmit=true&lmanufacturer=10086&whatbutton.x=0&page=0&lmodelflag=12130
£12-22k for a nice RHD ?
I'm sure you could buy a project for a lot lot less, but some of the parts will be amazingly expensive, if available at all.

Have a look at this month's Evo magazine too - they have one in it v the latest S class to measure performance etc. Quite eye-opening the differences (think it only equalled a Ford Focus 1.6 round their handling course at Bedford Autodrome in terms of lap-time...)
Very cool though...

I thought beating a new Focus's time was not too bad, given that the brakes didn't work, it had 180,000 miles, a 3-speed auto, not that much outright BHP, probably some interesting and rather small tyres, lots of weight, and an S-class is not exactly the sort of car to be quick round a track let alone a '70s one.
