Help !

I bought a 1999 ML320 on Saturday, on driving it home I started to notice a juddering and a burning smell. On investigation it seems that both front brakes are sticking on to some extent (lots of brake dust on the wheels and burning smell / smoke from the pads). It's up at my local garage at the moment being checked.

Anyone else experienced similar or have any suggestions ? It was sat around at the traders I bought it from for a couple of weeks.

Thanks

Had this happen on ours a few years ago (we owned the car for 7 years). From memory I think we replaced the calipers. (Sorry don't have the service file any longer, to confirm cost etc).

Thats what I feared !

I'm wondering whether the garage might recommend replacing the pads / discs as well ?

Perhaps pads if it's been happening a while. Maybe lucky with the discs.

At this age it maybe worth looking at somewhere like www.eurocarparts.com for the bits and fitting them yourself or getting an independent to do the work. Assuming of course you bought the car as seen, privately?

Remove the calipers, disassemble them, scrub them nice and clean (including the sides and backs of the pads), get some new bolts for the calipers (they're single use only tbh), give the hubs a scrub with a wire brush, lubricate some bits, and put it all back together.

Probably worth doing a fluid change as well.

UPDATE :

Garage have replaced the pads as they were sticking in the calipers, test drive afterwards showed the same problem (pads constantly rubbing on the discs and overheating them) they now think master cylinder ! £380 fitted !

Trader I purchased off is now considering transporting the ML back to him for repair !

After a bit of checking, the problem with ours was the piston calipers sticking. Like yours only happened on the fronts.

UPDATE :

Turned out to be the brake master cylinder, it has now been replaced and they seem to be working fine.

£260 parts
£40 labour
£38 brake fluid

Not too bad considering..

NO WAY IS IT THE MASTER CYLINDER! Anyone saying this is having you on, IMO, and are just going to refurb (clean out and file down) the calipers, which is the entirety of your problem.

At WORST you'd new new calipers (if pistons seizing) - but even then I think that that's unlikely.

It's nothing to do with the pads - they're just seizing in the grimed-up caliper guides - and it's corrosion-grime - so very hard, and enough to jam a pad in a given position.

I would proffer that you're being had!!

(Eeesh - just looked at the date of the above posting - oh well...)
