Guys,

I have a '99 SLK with the original aluminium alloys which have developed a horrible white discolouration that needs fixing. I'm a bit sceptical about getting them recoated so i'm tempted to buy new. I've been quoted just over £600 by the MB dealer for 4 new wheels.

I've also submitted a few requests to on-line breakers - had one reply so far for just under £500 for second hand wheels - not sure of condition.

Has anyone else been through this problem - is there anywhere else cheaper to buy the wheels from?

Cheers,

Lonny

I'm slightly baffled by why you don't want refurb but you'll consider wheels from a breaker. It's pretty unlikely you'll get a set in good nick, and the last thing you want is an alloy that might have hidden impact damage.

If you'll consider refurb, then Pristine Wheels in Northampton do a lot of work for MB dealers and are highly recommended on the merc forums. They'll collect, refurb, and return your wheels in a few days.

There are other in the South East - search for 'wheel refurb' on http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk

Pristine Wheels offer a good service and are used by most MB dealers! "Milky wheel" syndrome was a common problem on those laquered SLK alloys.

I've got an SLK with corroded wheels.I'm not alone,I've seen lots of others.I've approached Mercedes for a solution but they just bat me off with an "out-of warranty" response.Should we accept this when there is an obvious design/manufacture problem?

Refurbing them will only be a temporary solution for this problem.

Back of the Autotrader is the cheapest solution for a set of alloys, won't be genuine but you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference.

which wheels have you got fitted to the 99 SLK?
I have a set of wheels recently taken off my SLK320 replaced by 17's which I may part with. They are in a reasonable condition and has no sign of white deposits, the odd but very small kerb mark see photo in profile which show the type of wheel. More detailed photo's can be taken.
