I'm considering one of these to replace the trusty Freelander family wagon

I was wondering how much to spend to get a good one. Is it a better bet to get a later old shape model (£15k)or stretch to get a new (current) shape car (£20k)

I'm thinking 320cdi as that's what everyone recommends but other thoughts would be welcomed (my annual mileage will only be about 6k so fuel consumption isn't too much of a bother)

Also, any independent Merc specialists in Dorset or Hampshire that anyone could recommend would be welcomed

I have been considering a similar question and all advice I have been given from within the MBOC and outside is go for the newshape one (W211).

Avoid the 02/52 plate if you can as they had some electrical maladies.

Some of the old shape(W210)have well documented rust and build quality issues, and many report poor reliability especially with the diesel versions.

I have seen a few E270 CDI Avantgarde new shape estates around, with moderate mileage and some manufacturers warranty remaining, for around £20/22k at independant dealers.

Good luck

I'm surprised at that

I naturally assumed that the advice would be to get a nice old shape 320 where all the faults had been ironed out

I've heard the tales of woe about current Merc models and guessed I'd be steered away from the new shape

Incidentally, I've seen a couple of 320cdis for £19995 on Autotrader

With an anual mileage of only 6k have a look at the bigger engined petrol cars. I saved 3-4k by going E430 V8 instead of CDi. Probably with a better spec and lower servicing costs. Sure I only see low 20's but who cares? Petrol is 3-4p a liter cheaper too! Do give any older cars a thorough check. Rust is not uncommon.

Any you buy will be far nicer to drive/travel in that the Freelander.

Good luck.

I notice from your profile thay you also have a Disco TD5 - strangely, that's my other option for replacing the Freelander....how would you compare these (admittedly hugely diverse) cars for generally family transport?

The Disco (which went a while back! Must update my profile) is VERY agricultual compared to the Merc. It also probably offers a bit less usable space in the boot. A much high load area but not as long. Plus sides to the Disco ....

Go anywhere ability. A comfort in the winter months when snow is forcast.
Brilliant audio system
Great driving position
Wonderful tow car

The Merc

Far more civilised
MUCH quicker
More comfortable seats
Huge load area
Wife is happy to drive it

Try both. They are different though!

if I do get a disco it'll probably be a V8 which will negate a couple of the negatives you cited

also, my wife is hinting that she'll be happpier with a Disco rather than the Merc
