Happened to a friend of mine in his ML430 on the M1 contra-flow a few months back - caused a 5 mile jam as a result.. poor sod.

Common fault on the V6 and V8 engines, it's a sensor that puts the car into safe mode - £90 part from Mercedes, easy enough to change - mainly happens when in traffic as the unit gets hot from the heatsoak of the engine, will only fire up again once cooled down - if it happens again until you get it sorted, carry a litre of water and poor it down the back of the nearside rear of the engine (passenger side) (it will in traffic but if moving you should be ok) this will cool it down quicker and get you on your way sooner at least, all Merc dealers should be familiar with this.
