Recently acquired my SLK 350 and was familiarising myself with all the gadgets and gizmos. One thing I can't seem to find an answer for in the handbook is the speed reading in the lower digital display, between the speedo & rev counter. Mine is showing a reading in km/h. Can this be changed to mph, if so, how?

Nope. In other markets, you can choose a variety of things to display there, including outside temperature. However, the official line from Mercedes-Benz is that cars registered in the EU must display the speed in km/h at all times, and there are no markings on the speedometer, so you can't deselect the speed display, or change it. Of course, this is rubbish and they have misinterpreted the law. It actually says that the vehicle must be able to display the speed in km/h, which is quite different. Some people have managed to get theirs changed, but I'm not sure what's involved. Some dealers may be able to change it but I believe it is frowned upon by MB, even though they must realise by now they have got it wrong. Someone on another forum even got a letter of confirmation from the Department of Transport saying that an optional km/h display meets the legal requirements, and sent it to them. I shudder to think what they would say if they found out I was going to remove the speed limiter Actually you get used to the km/h display after a while. Initially I was going to try to get mine changed, but now I'm not really bothered.

Thanks for that! I'm not really that bothered, but just wondered if there was an easy way to change it that the handbook had overlooked. It would be more use to me if it were in mph - but it's not that much of a problem.

ANOTHER QUESTION.....

Do you run your car on ordinary unleaded or super unleaded? Is there any noticeable difference or advantages?

I intended to run mine mainly on super, but up to now have only found convenient stations stocking ordinary.

I'm certain super-unleaded is recommended: engine capacity and compressor necessitated.

OY! LA you've been in the States too long....you've started talking out of your bottom!

The 350 has NO Kompressor/supercharger and will run fine on normal unleaded.

Apparently the 55AMG should run only on super but I don't know how much BS that is. On the AMG driving day the instructor said they filled all the cars up wih normal unleaded.

Yes, but those guys don't work for Mercedes-Benz and they only get the cars for the day, so what do they care.

Yours may be UK spec but presumably not a UK market car.

It must be unique then Mercedes-Benz are on record as saying it must be in Km/h and dealers are instructed not to change it. Also, that's what it says in the manual. A few people got it changed by dealers before the edict went out.

I've noticed that the owner's manual does state 95RON for the 350 and 98RON for the 55AMG then all the usual B'LOX about causing engine damage if instructions not followed etc.
I just thought that 98RON would be better for the 350 also and just wondered if anyone had noticed any difference.

Last month I tried it on Optimax for the first time since purchase and it "seemed" faster and my MPG was slightly improved....but it could just be me.
