Another day, another car spotted and the mind is a racing

CLK - girlie car? Discuss...

AMG version - horrendous money pit or fantastic fun? ? ?

I have seen a friends 2001 model (has indicators in wingmirrors, does that signify facelift model?) and really rather like it. Not a fan of MB's insistance on using auto's but these cars seem to represent fantastic value for money now. Rear seat is a bonus for kiddies when we all go out but am I better off looking for an SL? Don't know an awful lot about these cars so forgive my vague post....

Current CLK55 has a 5.5 ltr V8 with 367bhp and 375lb/ft of torque. It is certainly no slouch. If you like the looks then go for it but I personally think it needs to be more agressive. Sometimes you can mistake it for lesser versions. They were 65k odd new and they can be picked up at very good prices. I don't believe they're that expensive to run and if you buy a used one at a good price the previous owner(s) would've taken the biggest depreciation hit. You should manage 17-21 mpg depending on the roads.

I don't think it's a girlie car at all. But then again I have an SLK55 AMG so I would say that. As for the SL, you'll find that the 55AMG is supercharged with 500bhp so it's quicker than the CLK but then again a lot more expensive to run and apparently can be unreliable.

HTH.

Yeah the AMG SLK is out of my price range by some margin sadly. I see what you mean about the modest styling but that is a two way thing - I like understated agressive look. Of course take the wheels off and the side skirts and thats about it heh.

What are the accepted service intervals, usually? Seems to work out about once a year on cars I see for sale. Is that enough?

Service intervals are dependent on the mileage computer but around 10k miles or once a year. It's not majorly expensive.

What's your budget?

Well I didnt really have one until I saw this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl

Wheels look like they've had a shocker and the history isn't as regular as I would expect but on the face of it that seems bargain of the year doesn't it?

It has got me thinking but there aren't many around to compare with. Budget is up to 15k for arguments sake...

I would be a little careful with this particular car.

There has been a discussion on MB Forums about this which have highlighted a few points.

Hmmmm, I might have to swap my E320 for a CLK55 at some point in the fairly near future. Although, two AMGs might be over the top

i used to have a CLK 230K,not the same as the AMG by any means, but would i buy an AMG yes i certainly would, they are coming to a point where thier great value now and yes i would buy an SL55 over a CLK if money wasnt an issue but for a lot of us it sadly is, the CLK i dont think is a girlie car at all nor do i think it holds that image with most people, the SLK though-as great a car as it may be does have a slightly girlie image.

Many thanks Anis - you need to be a member to read it though...

*edit* just registered and read the thread. Putting 2 and 2 together its easy to conclude that car may have has a rear ender with the exhaust/boot shut lines & dinks.

wife has newstyle clk 500, a friend has clk AMG. The amg is harsher ride which doesn't totally suit the cruiser style car. It must be a very weak amg engine does it have no supercharger or wot?

Not asked what mileage they get but it can't be great. I have e55 estate and if i freewheel down a hill it shows 30mpg, which i feel is a bit hopeless, really. Otherwise, if actually pushing the car along it's 15-20, 13-14 if whamming along bit er abroad, officer.
