When it comes to cars, everyone wants a bargain. And with cars getting more reliable, more durable and more rot-free than ever they have been, paying pocket money for an older machine need not be a total restoration job.

In other words, old cars have never been such a good buy. So in the spirit of aiming for fun, low-cost motoring, here's our regular weekly slot. We've trawled the depths of Auto Trader to find a drive-away bargain for £500 or less.

So here's this week's car (and if you find a bargain worth of inclusion next week, let us know):

1993 K Reg MERCEDES-BENZ 190E 1.8. 4 Doors, Manual 5 speed, Saloon, Petrol, 124,000 miles, Red, MOT-11-2006, 1 Owner. ABS, Adjustable seats, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Central locking, Child locks, Cloth upholstery, Colour coding - Body, Colour coding - Interior, Driver airbag, Front armrest, Power assisted steering, Rear armrest, Wheel trims. Insurance Group 12, Warranty available, MoT and valet. £499.

Theres a number of E34 535i's that I would prefer for the price in autotrader, there is even a 525ix.

Joy, I wondered when my specialist subject would come up!

But I'd say buy an earlier 2.0 190E, they go decently while the 1.8 is pretty miserable especially if it's an auto.

And trust me even with that you can have tail out fun (ok only in the wet..) - as a bonus the handling is (surprisingly?) great - composed, neutral and balanced - if you are prepared to get past the body roll and slow steering.

And unlike all the other "sheds of the week", it will last longer than the end of the week... (but buy without rust)

Better than the Cavalier I had after leaving Uni. It's even pretty low mileage.
