The new Mercedes S500 and SL500, with their 5.5 V8's, make 383bhp (impressive).

So where does that leave AMG with their hand built '55' 5.4 V8 making only 367bhp? Kind of looks a bit silly to me - although I know the AMG engine is based on an older unit, and is almost certainly the more special of the two.

I guess they must be replacing it pretty shortly - they've released the new 6.1 V8 now and it will apparently fit in all their models, but I can't imagine the SLK getting a 510bhp V8..!

I can

Anyway it would easy for them to detune it slightly if they think it's overpowering the chassis, makes life easier for the tuners as well

does the amg tuned 55 not have compressor and produce 500bhp in the s and sl class
the c55 is naturally aspirated and produces the lower figure

Well the AMG 5.5 V8 in the C55 has ~360bhp as you say with no compressor.

The new S-class has Mercedes' new 5.5 V8 with 380bhp, which is more than AMGs version?!?

While we're on the subject, AMG's new 6.3 V8 is an all-new design, totally designed by them and not based on an existing Mercedes engine I believe.. tasty.

Can't see why there would be a problem with the SLK.
