Hi guys,

Was just reading some info online about the W124 E60 AMG. 0-60 was quoted as 5.3 and a derestricted Vmax about 180mph. What I don't understand is that the 6.0 variant of the W124 AMG Hammer sprinted to 60 in 5 sec flat and maxxed out at 185+, but it only has 4bhp more than the E60. I cant remember the torque figures off hand but I'm pretty sure they are almost the same, and they both ran on 4 speed auto boxes. (At least these figures are the 4-speed 'boxes - not sure if 5 speeders were offered as an option).
Does anyone out there know if these figures are correct and if so, why the slight difference in performance, where the only real difference is that both engine derived from different V8 blocks?

Cheers,

Darren

One figure could be a 0-62 time? I guess gear ratios could be different.

Could be something like gearing, who tested them etc.

They are very very rare cars and not that popular, so the number of times they have been performance tested would be very low. Given that, there's a chance testers would not be too brutal with the cars when testing.

Also, AMG being AMG, they would build a car however you want (particularly back in those days), so various specs could be different for each car.

Despite the slowish figures, I suspect the ~380bhp (?) hammer/E60 is very very fast once you get moving, quicker than (say) a E46 M3.

There's an owner of one (a barn find!) on either mbclub.co.uk, mercedesclub.org.uk or maybe it was Mercedesshop.com

Yer he's in this month's Mercedes Benz Owners Club Gazette. That one has a 5 litre 32 valve engine. Nice car, but I'd prefer to have this one I found online:

The Hammers had a 32 valve head - AMG made and now ultra rare.

BHP figures for the Hammers are varied, but AMG did get up to 370BHP from a 500SEL with this head. - but AMG didn't keep any records for this period !

The Hammers also came with 3 engine sizes - 5.0, 5.6 & 6.0 depending on the market.

In respect of the auto boxes - I believe they were all four speed. Even the 500E/ E500 was never offered with a five speed box due to torque levels.

Hope this helps.
