ML270 CDI - Any good?
Discussion
I've driven a fair few and they fall into two camps, ones that kick down when you plant your right foot, and ones that don't. ones that don't kick down are generally v slow and can't be rectified 'they all do that sir'. Look for one with 'Lux Pack' on it, you'll get heated 'leccy memory leather seats and heated memory mirrors too. Being yank tanks, they generally aren't wanting for anything, a factory removeable towbar is always nice as is an autochanger (fitted behind a panel in the offside of the boot, you have to dismantle the car to get at it) The 'Family Pack' option was a good couple of grand when new, and is basically two extra seats in the boot and pop open rear 1/4 windows, dealers don't put any extra on the value of the car for this, so don't believe them when they tell you it's a premium as it just eats up the boot space. The optional spare wheel carrier on the boot looks nice if you like that kind of thing, but on the motorway it's like having a parachute on and costs extra fuel. Speaking of motorways, if you're doing some miles on them, our local BiB had ML's for motorway work and all had wider wheels put on for extra stability.
Go for silver or black with anthracite leather, and bear in mind the new models just appeared and you shouldn't go too wrong. All the interior quaility issues you may have heard will be well sorted on a 2000 model. The very first (grey bumpers) were built in a new factory (Alabahma) by new workers, so they were never going to be A1. Hope this helps.
