Mercedes SL55 R230 Ignition key not turning to start
Discussion
Hi folks, this week I got my car back from getting a broken gear selector fixed, was common enough issue being stuck in Park. As part of the fix the centre console was removed, also in around the steering column as mechanic said the Park had to be unlocked from ignition switch.
All good since, driving well including yesterday. Key wouldn t turn in it yesterday evening. Locked car unlocked etc. eventually it turned I got car started the turned it off but haven t been able to today. Disconnected both batteries, reconnected, it did light up when inserted the key but couldn t turn it. During the work he removed the Parrot Bluetooth kit as I don t need it. Also it had the red battery visit workshop error on dash since I got it back but wasn t causing obvious issues but maybe related. I ve swapped batteries and fully charged them both.
Any idea of what is the issue and how to fix it? I can t even get it to my mechanic. He might pop out to my house but better if I get it to him.

IIRC Mercs of that era can have problems with their ignition switches, but I don't think the problems were not being able to turn it - more it was the source of other problems with the car. As your mechanic has been in that area, it seems likely that the problem is as a result of his actions. I'd speak to him about it.
Thanks for your reply. My mechanic came out at lunchtime and took some trim off to extract the barrel, Electronic Ignition System (EIS). He opened it and a copper clip fell into his hand but we don’t know from where or its purpose.
He’s away with him and the key to hopefully release it without the need for a replacement. It all looked perfect, no damp or burnt bits.
I rang my MB Indy about it too both places know each other. He’d a spare gearshift gaiter with keyless button on top. I’d suggested giving it a go to see if I could start and stop using it. MB Indy wasn’t sure if it was possible.
