When we ask the 'Hey Mercedes' lady news related questions, it would suggest that the car must have it's own internet connection.
I used my tablet in the car to search for networks and it showed a network incorporating the name MBUX.
Password required.

Are we as the car owner allowed to connect to that network, or is it perhaps only for use by Mercedes-Benz?
If we are allowed, how do I find what the password is?

Hi There

These are two different things. Both are chargeable.

The Hey Mercedes what's the weather etc, would use the cars onboard 4G connection to give answers from the internet, live traffic information etc. To make this work, you need to ensure the dealer has set you as the authorised user, and then you need to download the Mercedes ME app on your phone and sign up to a subscription. I believe the first 3 years are free for new cars or approved used.

The onboard WIFI you see is actually using the cars own 4G signal, to broadcast a WIFI signal to your devices. Think your phone, or your kids tablets in the back. To make this work, the above steps would also need to be followed to make the general system work, and then purchase a data package from Mercedes - Generally speaking there is little point of this though if you have a good data allowance on your mobile, as you can use this as your mobile phone hotspot to achieve the same results, without the additional Mercedes data package.

Thanks

Thank you Greg. Exactly the information that I was seeking.

The 4G answers from the Internet, will no doubt cease for me next month, when the car becomes 3 years old.
I have only asked such questions for fun, certainly not needed by me.

Yes, using an existing phone as a 'hot-spot', seems to be the best way to view the Internet on a tablet (larger screen).
I expect the M-B subscription for their 4G sgnal, might anyway be higher than most mobile phone calls and data subscriptions.

I now have a wireless connection for Android Auto, which activates automatically, but apart from using Google Navigation, I have not found much else of use. Obviously dashboard screen videos are dangerous, but disappointed that they are not allowed when parked. I know there are work arounds, but they can function when driving, so I don't want any temptation.
