C class estate, particularly c200.
Any inherrent problems at all? I don't think an E230 or 5 series will be within budget as it is going to be a number 2 car. So I need to get one asap really. There are a few on ebay for a good price so if anyone could highlight any questions that I may need to ask I would be grateful.
I'm not after a speed machine, hence the c200 however I have heard the c180 is dire but will obviously listen if it isn't. I don't need speed, I have the TVR to shake the teeth out of my head, just as long as the Merc will do school runs, motorway runs etc etc.
I'll bugger off now, sorry to be a pain in the rear.
Mike.

Oh yes, they are chain driven aren't they?:banghead:

Mike,

Trust you are well

MB owners club report following :

Early 4cyl and c280 cars can leak oil from cylinder head joint - modified gasket fixes it.

At high mileage, tickover can become lumpy due to build up of sludge in rocker box - engine flush solves problem.

Four speed autos fine, electronic 5 speeds (post 1996)are sealed for life and can be problematic - jumping out of gear into neutral, rumbling noise from gearbox.

For ease of identification, four speeds have 'E' AND 'S' modes, 5 speeds have 'S' AND 'W' modes.

Instrument panels can go down and will require total new panel plus download of info on servicing, ignition / security. Cannot be done without correct diagnostic equipment.

On the whole pretty reliable, high mileage not an issue, and have low level of electronic black boxes to go wrong.

Recommend try and get full MBSH or part MB, part specialist.

Good luck - see if you can keep it for more than 4 weeks !!

Regards

Nigel
