W205 2017 C270 cdi Auto box problem - help

My friend has a weird issue on his auto box. The car is fine in eco mode but in other modes he can pull up in traffic and the gearbox drops to neutral at idle, he then tries to pull off and he had to manually put it in drive....it can stick in neutral and then sometimes tries to pull away in 3rd.

It sometimes throws an engine light - the fault code searches as "cannot locate reverse" - he took it to an indy specialist who said the software was too new but cleared the reverse code - it seemed better but has now got a lot worse.


Any thoughts before he takes it to main dealer - they will probably just want to swap a whole box.
