Just to prove that they don't make them like they used too - I have just bought a 190E 2.3 - 16. Even though I get a company C Class for day to day use, I shelled out my own money on a piece of history. Guess what, it feels better, rides like a new car and has less squeaks. It's 17 years old for crying out loud - the question is 'what will the 203 feel like in 17 years time?'.

Did you see Wheeler Dealers recently on Discovery Real Time?

www.channel4.com/4car/advertorial/wheelerdealers/

The premise is that they buy a tired modern classic and refurbish it. This week they did a 190E 2.3 Cosworth. The only major issue was that the hydraulic self levelling rear suspension was completely knackered and so they replaced it with conventional springs and dampers (and the front too). Not cheap, but the parts for the hydraulic system are very expensive and it's a common problem. Apart from that, just the usual high mileage Merc saloon problems with steering bushes and track rod ends etc needing replacement.

Not running one but looking to shortly... any advice?

I currently have a plain 190E 2.0 so know the feeling you are describing, in spite of its 19 years and 105,000 miles it's comparable to much, much newer cars.

Taking my new toy to work tomorrow (merc dealership)...soon find out about that suspension. Let you know what I find. Got 50 miles of winding A roads to test on the way. Happy days.

The one on TV was obviously knackered because the ride height was wrong at the back. Chances are, if the ride height is OK then it's fine.

..it's sound. Suspension been sorted over past few years. Found that all 4 wheels needed balancing, done for a tenner. The valeter superguarded the inside and out for £40, the car is now pristine. Drove home like a dream, sticks like glue, lacks low down torque, but from 4500 she goes and sounds awesome. Call me a cynic but found a nail on outside edge of rear tyre when I got home. How come these things appear when you have just left a tyre shop?? No way I would give them the pleasure of replacing the tyre. Is it possible they place nails all around the forecourt or do you think they pop one in when you're not looking. Anyone got a cheap contact for Pirelli's?

"The valeter superguarded the inside and out for £40"

Hmmm. MB normally charge about 10 times that for Supaguarding, don't they? Although the place I bought my SLK did the Supaguarding for half-price (£199).

The Cosworth 190 sounds as though it'll become a modern classic - you've obviously found a nice example!

Another big money maker for the dealership. The kits cost about £70. The valeters apply it during the course of their day and the dealer marks it up by another £330. I got mine cheap as the valeters save a little from each application and apply it to their own cars!!!

Yeh, EVO 2, saw that one for £20K. Lot a money but what an eye opener. I nearly went for an Evo 1 before I saw this one, even that looked a piece but needed too much work for me.

yes i think so, they were bid £6000 a few years ago by a boxer so it wont be cheap though. It does look good on a car though.
