Hi all, I have an m113 5ltr V8 and it ticks slightly on start up and continues to do it whilst driving. Despite asking several garages/specialists to diagnose, I cannot find a solution. Has anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts as to what might be causing it?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Will.

Not an common engine, nowadays.

I assume its the lifters.

Has the oil recently been changed (or not) - is it the right grade? etc.

Surprised a specialist didn't suggest this immediately.

Thanks for the response. It has literally just been serviced and definitely the correct oil. However, it has been doing it for maybe 3k miles. I think it's time to find a new Merc specialist!

I believe this engine (and many MB V8s around that era) had an issue that the oil tubes for the cam become crimped or clogged, so even if it has been serviced and the oil is the right grade, this might be preventing the correct volume of oil getting to the lifters.

I’m not sure if it’s the M119 or M113 (not that I’m questioning the previous poster BTW).

Do a bit of Googling for example on YouTube on this engine in the R129, not sure if that’s what you’ve got, but I understand it needs flushing out.

Not sure what the M113 is but my CL63 5.5 does it constantly. I was told it’s the injection pump, under very high pressure. Perfectly normal

I had a ticking noise on my E500 that I traced to a small leak in a hose that connected to the secondary air pump. Small length of silicon hose and all was well again.

I would suggest having a good listen around the engine bay to try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from - I've seen people use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to pinpoint where sounds come from... surprised none of the specialists tried that - can you name/hint at who you used? I'd recommend Herts Merx in Letchworth but it looks like you are in Cheshire.

Anyway, if you can pinpoint the area the sound is coming from then it narrows things down considerably.

Could be timing chain tensioner.
A stethoscope would help narrow it down.
