Opinions on the 220d diesel engine - 2020/21 vintage?
Discussion
Thanks - that's reassuring. I'm planning on buying a GLB 220d, just getting nervous about the whole diesel debate and whether it's going to be worth peanuts in 5 years time.

I had it in MY2020 E class. Owned it for 2 years without any issues. Decent poke and mpg. Only sold it because I wanted a AMG
Provided the 220 badged car uses the 2.1 merc engine it's fine. I used to run circa 80 Vitos with this engine mated to the 7 speed auto and they were painless.
Issues were nox sensors when over 100k miles and injectors nearer 200k miles. These would be 3-5 years old at this point and mainly down to the fact the high miles were done in an urban environment.

It’s likely to be the 2.0 if it’s a 20/21 model. Issues were nox sensors when over 100k miles and injectors nearer 200k miles. These would be 3-5 years old at this point and mainly down to the fact the high miles were done in an urban environment.
I ran two of these engines, both in a W213 E220d.
First from 0 miles to 43,000 miles.
Second from 20,000 miles to 40,000 miles.
Pretty efficient (c.45-55mpg) without trying. Reasonably swift (0-60 in about 7.7 seconds).
For a 4 cylinder. 2.0 litre diesel I thought it was relatively refined and smooth.
There seems to be an issue with some of these engines at about 90,000 miles plus that requires quite a lot of headwork (£2-3k). I suspect this might also be the case with the E400d too as they share the same basic architecture - but not many E400d have reached that mileage yet.
Overall, a great, modern package - just make sure all the services were carried out properly.

I’ve seen chains elongate, usually through lack of servicing. Same for a few dead turbos, lack of servicing. It’s hardly ever through random mechanical breakdown. It’s a strong engine. Seen many that are 200k plus. First from 0 miles to 43,000 miles.

Nox sensors… that’s a different story!
We have a 21 E220d coupe and a 69 A7 50 TDI, the merc is a lot quieter and smoother you only really notice the power difference at motorway speeds + which is impressive to say there is 100hp between them. If the E was my daily I would be more than happy with it.
Driving it from south London to North Lincolnshire we saw 65 MPG which is great for a big car and the 9 speed is a lot snappier than Audis 8 speed slushmatic!
Cheers,
Dan
