Morning all,

Been running a 2014 w204 c63 for about 5 years now in estate form and getting itchy feet for a change.

But how on earth do you follow such a machine!

Can I ask for any long term owners what you moved onto if you were happy with the decision.

I moved from my 2011 ppp estate to a 2014 Freelander.

The reasons make sense to only me!

Do these not feel fairly big and cumbersome in comparison?

I went from a W204 C63 507 estate (had it 4 years / 40,000 miles) to a 2022 E63s estate.

Didn’t enjoy the E63s and sold it after ~1 year

Alpina B5 is my choice and I have had a C63 for the last five years. Maybe just maybe a Lexus LC500 because of the looks and service. Third choice is a BMW M5 competition.

I wouldn't say the R8 would be a competitor for the fact it is only a 2 seater, but the Alfa seems like a good call, albeit definitely lacking in the noise department. I don't think you'll get anything new which matches the noise to be honest.

Alfa is a decent contender

I have also considered e63s but I’m just not sure what it offers extra other than breathtaking acceleration at the cost of decent noise. Interior also a big step up.

I think I need to go test an Alfa q and see.

I am keeping my 2014 C63 wagon as it is civilised fast and does that job very well. It sits in a fleet of 8, so other car requirements are covered...wafting, point to point, cross continent, towing, LHD etc. So keep it and buy something to complement it.

This is what I had planned as a replacement to my w204 C63, so I test-drove one.
I realise nobody will agree with me here, but... It was too fast.
90% of the reason I have the C63 is the engine sound, and while the E63s did sound very nice, I had no time to listen to it. Foot down - 0.3ms later you're at the speed limit. At least with the C63 I get a couple of seconds to enjoy the sound before I have to slow down.

What would you recommended? I already have tow/dog/waft and electric covered. Perhaps a Caterham
Or atom or corvette?

I see where you're coming from. I recently had a new M4 competition xdrive for 5 days. It was utterly bonkers and I'm absolutely convinced it's churning out way over 510bhp. Not often you can use it to its potential, and with that it didn't sound great either. Was a great steer though, I could forgive the noise considering how well it drove. M3 Touring would be nice.

I went from a 2013 C63 to an Aston Rapide - which was an experience. I liked the Rapide, but didn't love it as I had my previous Vantages.. strange old world! Currently looking at C or E63's of 2015/16 varieties. Other than that, you'd need a Space-X Falcon to replicate pace and load carrying ability. M3 Wagon would be in with a shout if they'd fallen about £80k smile

I agree. The C63 only really flies if you get up in the 5-7krpm region, which you don't get the chance to that often.

I had an S204 C63 for five years and ended up using it on long motorway journeys a lot of the time as we have family in France. The sound was too muted inside, although it was epic if you cracked the boot open and tied it down against a towel. I was somewhat disappointed with its handling, which lacks front end bite, so I didn't take it for drives just for the sake of it very often.

I have now replaced it with a BMW F11 535i Touring, very rare in manual form. I've done a lot to it since buying it last July to refresh a lot of parts, including suspension and clutch/flywheel. I've also fitted M5 comfort seats, tuned it to around 400hp/450lb/ft with a bigger intercooler and sports cat. Having had numerous NA BMW straight sixes before the C63 it's good to be back. I enjoy the sound as much, if not more so, than the (slightly too American sounding) M156. With double wishbone suspension up front it has better cornering than the C63 and is a joy to steer. The more supple suspension and long wheelbase make for more refined progress. It's actually only less than 50kg heavier than the C63 so barely slower in normal use, if at all.

In my opinion, for a family car a six cylinder engine is an excellent choice because it offers decent range and sufficient performance when tuned. A four is too slow/boring and an eight is too thirsty. I do intend to add a Lotus Elise to the stable soon to have something for pure driving enjoyment as I really miss having a light car. Then I'll have something fit for each purpose, rather than trying to have one for everything.

If you want hoon, then those two would be characterful options. Personally, I filled that job in my fleet with an uprated Elise S1.

I really love these but just wish they'd done a coupe version as for some reason I really just don't like saloons! I've only just got my W204 C63 but if I can swallow that irrational opinion that'll possibly where I'd go next.

Or an AMG GT, if budget allows...

I've heard the AMG GT isn't that great to drive, feels a bit numb and nothing special.
