Just had the DVLA recordable steering rack bolt recall done at MB and their usual ‘health check’ highlighted new front discs due. Pads look fine but obv they need changing together. A quote of 580 had me scurrying away. I think that was plus VAT. Blimey.

I will double check it’s needed but assuming it is are there any brand recommendations for these specific items please? I might do them myself. I’ve done hundreds of bike disc rotors so err how hard can it be?.. hmm.

Anyway - would like a reliable and quality brand without going for gold plated specials. No idea what is decent (or a decent typical price). Appreciate a steer..

I have used Brembo pads and discs (via Autodoc) on my X166 GL. Changing them was straightforward (from memory it needs an 11mm hex key) and there has been no issues from my DIY.

Thanks. Just watched couple of YouTubes. Looks easy enough. Do recall my father swearing for a whole day about 40 years ago as he lost the will to live with sheared bolts mind - so I’m haunted by that. Ha.

We find genuine discs are usually a few ££ more expensive than Pagid, Brembo etc. Might be worth checking the price of genuine parts.

If you're fitting them yourself, try one of the dealers that have ebay online shops, ie MB Newcastle, MB Edinburgh etc., they can sometimes be quite competitive.

I had warranty work done and the main dealer workshop gave me a list including brake discs being 0.5mm below recommended tolerance, came with mega quote for works costing serious 4 digits. Took car to my normal independent who said most of the work was unnecessary.

well I looked at them today.
Front - reported as 'bad' by dealer. Clean, no ridges and the wear lip is a perhaps a couple of mm. Didnt measure thickness as wheel on and dont actually know how thick they should be at end of life. Pads fine as they stated.
Back - reported as 'fine' by dealer. Clean, no ridges and the lip is the same few mm.

Ummm...

They do like to corrode on the inside face. Yes there is a minimum thickness but it’s usually the minimum thickness for pad replacement

I think Ill just leave it for my next service in Sept. Will only do 3000 miles or so in it by then as only used for long journeys to family etc.

This link might refer to your vehicle, or it might not wink, however, it will give you an indication of the min/max thickness specifications if you click on the fitment info. and, in this case, there's 2.6mm difference, so if your 'lips' are a couple of mm. you're either close to the limit, if that's the total, or past it if it's a couple of mm. per face of the disc/rotor.

Either way, I'd suggest that the garage sound as if their report is 'reasonable'. Without wishing to teach granny to suck eggs, I'd also add that even though your pads might be okay, good practice is that they should be replaced when you change the discs: only mentioning it as it's been debated many times.
